- HOME EV CHARGING
Why Your Electric Vehicle Needs a Proper Charging Point
A standard 13-amp plug socket is not designed for regular EV charging. In most cases, using one does not meet current wiring regulations and can lead to overheating or damage to your wiring.
A dedicated EV charger is faster, safer and gives you access to smart features such as off-peak charging rates, helping you get the most from your vehicle from day one.
A proper EV charging point gives you:
- Faster, safer charging at home
- Built-in electrical safety protection
- Smart charging features and off-peak tariff control
- A properly assessed installation, not a one-size-fits-all setup
- Full testing and certification on completion

- COMMON QUESTIONS
EV Charger Installation — Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a normal plug socket to charge my EV?
A standard 13A plug socket can be used for occasional EV charging using a manufacturer-supplied “granny charger”, however it is not ideal for regular long-term charging. Where used, the socket should ideally be a dedicated outlet installed specifically for EV charging – not part of a general household socket circuit.
A dedicated EV charger provides faster charging, built-in safety protection, and is designed for continuous EV charging use.
How much does an EV charger installation cost?
Installation costs vary depending on your property, charger choice, cable route, and any additional electrical requirements. Most standard domestic installations fall within a typical price range, which we’ll confirm following a survey and discussion about your installation requirements.
How long does an EV charger installation take?
Most standard EV charger installations are completed within a single day.
More complex installations involving longer cable routes, electrical upgrades, or groundwork may require additional time, which will always be discussed beforehand.
Where is the best place to install my EV charger?
The best location depends on where you park, your existing electrical installation, and the most practical cable route.
During the survey, we’ll advise on the safest, neatest, and most practical installation position for your property.
Do I need to upgrade my consumer unit?
Not always.
Many existing consumer units are suitable for EV charger installation, however some properties may require upgrades or additional protection devices to meet current regulations safely.
This will be assessed during your survey before any work is agreed.
Will my EV charger work with solar panels?
Many modern EV chargers can integrate with existing solar systems to help make use of surplus generated energy.
Compatibility depends on the charger selected and your existing solar equipment, which we can discuss during your survey.
Do I need a good WiFi signal?
Many smart EV chargers rely on WiFi for app control, scheduling, software updates, and energy monitoring features.
A stable signal near the charger location is recommended, although many chargers can also operate without WiFi and smart functionality if required.
What if I already have a charger or a specific brand in mind?
That’s absolutely fine.
We regularly install customer-selected chargers and can advise on suitable options depending on your property, budget, and required features.
As an approved Andersen EV installer and Myenergi Product Champion, we can also help guide you through premium charger options where required.
